1983

1983

Chairman: Frank Mansfield  Secretay: Frank Anderson

5 teams make it to the finals but none to the Grand Final.

Noel Myers from the Willetton Football Club pens the theme song, “We are the Boys from Willetton”  to the tune of “The Marine’s Hymn” for the Amateur’s Club and it is subsequently adopted by Willetton Junior Football Club.

The WAFL and Junior Council creates single age group competitions in 1983. There will be a grade for each age year which creates a need for more players, coaches and officials. Teams may now have unlimited reserves who can only be interchanged at at the end of each quarter, interchange during the game can only occur if a player is injured.

In March the Junior Football Committee states their commitment to ensure where there are more than one team in an age group they will select as far as possible teams of equal ability. This will mean every boy will experience a meaningful game each week.

The Willetton Sports Club submit a proposal to the City of Canning for a basketball stadium and additional toilets and changerooms to service the South Oval.  The combined stadium and southern changeroom cost will be $350,000 which the WSC will take out a loan for and the City of Canning has been requested to contribute $150,000.

From WSC Road Runner December 1983 edition

Burrendah Reserve has had a major set back to the establishment of the turf as the bore near Pine Tree Gully Road is found to be very high in acidity and is causing the grass to suffer.   This coupled with the ovals being fertilised while the bore was not working resulted in extreme burning of the grass which has the 1984 winter season in doubt. The WSC is hoping the efforts of the Council will ensure the grass is healthy and thriving soon,.
